Il y a encore quelques années les mainframes, régnaient en maîtres dans les centres de calculs des grandes entreprises comme EDF ou dans les banques.
Ces superordinateurs géants apparus dans les années 50 ont fait la réputation de IBM et ont joué un rôle important, comme pour la NASA, où ces ordinateurs ont grandement facilité la conquête de la lune.
Mais ces dinosaures de l’informatique sont sur le point d’être définitivement relégués au rang de pièces de musée. En effet la NASA via leur blog a annoncé l’extinction définitive de son dernier ordinateur central, un IBM system Z9.
